MISSION

    The Becas  Alas  scholarship program is committed to encouraging Mexican, Latino, and broader community participation in supporting the educational advancement of  low-income students of Mexican or Latino origin who have been accepted to institutions of higher education.      Becas Alas  seeks to help eliminate financial barriers for students and ensure that  economic hardship does not prevent qualified individuals from pursuing higher  education.  

ABOUT
    IMME Becas is a  Mexican government program of the Instituto  de Mexicanas y Mexicanos en el Exterior (IMME), under  the Mexican Foreign Ministry, designed to support Mexican  nationals and individuals of Mexican or Latino origin.   
 
Becas Alas  is a regional initiative of IMME Becas with the participation of the  Mexican Consulates of Fresno, Los Angeles, Oxnard, San Bernardino, and Santa Ana. The objective is to raise  at least $200,000  USD through diverse fundraising efforts to provide financial  grants  ranging from $1,000  to $1,500 USD  to graduating high school seniors who have received an official letter of  acceptance from an accredited college or university.    

Fiscal Agency: The Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF)Serves solely as the program's fiscal agent, and does not determine programmatic decisions. Founded in 1963 by Latino civil rights leader and social entrepreneur Dionicio Morales, MAOF serves communities across
Contra Costa, Los Angeles, Kern, Monterey, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Ventura counties. MAOF is a nonrofit organization recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity.


PROCESS 
    Students must apply directly for the scholarship through the  official application portal listed below. All applications will be securely stored in a database managed by the fiscal agency, in coordination with the participating Consulates of Mexico mentioned  above. The consulates will compile and submit the list of applicants to the Regional  Committee,  which will review the submissions and select  recipients  based on established  eligibility criteria.  Each selected student will receive a one-time financial grant ranging from $1,000 to  $1,500 USD.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

    Applications  will be evaluated based on academic merit and resilience in  overcoming hardships
 

To be  eligible, students must:  

Be a high school senior during the 2025–2026 academic year and graduate in 2026.  

Be of Mexican  or Latino heritage.  

Provide a letter  of acceptance from an  accredited college or university.

Have a minimum  GPA of 2.5.  

Submit a personal  essay  of up to 500 words.

Complete  and submit the online  application,  including all required supporting documents.  

Reside in one of the following California counties: Fresno, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Los Angeles, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Orange,  Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Tulare or Ventura.  

The application opens on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 and closes on September 4, 2026, at 11:59 pm (Pacific Time). If you are accessing the application form via a mobile device, please ensure that your default browser (e.g.,Safari, Chrome, etc.) has a Google account logged in, as the Becas Alas application is a Google Form.
